With every new obstacle we face, this process is repeated absentmindedly, but the way we choose to react and what we absorb from these events is what ultimately makes us grow. As humans, we tend to find a suitable comfort space, that when in front of the unknown we close ourselves off in fear. Unfortunately, we become so accustomed that we take the hinges off our door, isolating ourselves and repressing the daunting task of opening up again. This submissiveness†¦show more content†¦As he is unable to understand yet why God would allow war, or let people turn to sin, his ideal notion of justice and forgiveness through Christ is shattered. Anaya beautifully illustrates Antonio’s anti-baptism through Lupito’s death as he contrasts the purification of the soul with the staining of the river. â€Å"He fell forward then clawed an d crawled out of the holy waters of the river ... † (Anaya 22) shifts into â€Å"The river’s brown waters would be stained with blood, forever and ever and ever †¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Anaya 24). With only two pages apart we see the apparent shift in Antonio. With his youthful innocence soiled forever and ever, Toni must find validation elsewhere and comes to the conclusion that only he could offer it for himself. Antonio’s inquisitive nature leads him to the questioning of God, although it is said sin to doubt God, he wishes to understand if he is to reach his destiny. His religious ambivalence, leads him to learn the story of a pagan god, The Golden Carp. With the capturing tale of a benevolent god, who not only forgave all the people who sinned and disobeyed but also fought relentlessly for the other gods sympathy towards the humans, Antonio is mesmerized as this god has exactly what his other God lacks.
